Home of William Wignall

Continue north on 200 East, turn left on 400 North heading west. The one and a half story white stucco home is located on the southwest corner of 100 East and 400 North.

This is the William Wignall home which was built in March of 1857.  It was one of the first homes built outside of Fort Payson and is one of Payson’s oldest homes still standing. The Wignall’s came with the fated Martin Handcart Company of 1856. Somehow all six children, William and his wife, Grace Slater Wignall, survived the ordeal. They entered the Salt Lake Valley November 26, 1856 and were sent by Brigham Young to Fort Payson on November 30, 1856.  Grace hated the fort and told William if he didn’t build her a home by March she would take the children and go back to England.  A great-granddaughter, Grace Flinders restored the home in 1989.
